The borough, which has a population of 125,000, includes the town (45.826) as well as its suburbs, including Hayling Island and Rowland's Castle. The 20-year period following World War II saw a significant conversion of land from agricultural and woodland to housing. This was after the Blitz and incendiary bombings of Portsmouth.
